Uncle Fran

In response to my post from yesterday, the following Henry Ford quote: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

I received this email from my Uncle Fran, “The wisdom of this quote is lost on the current generation of politicians who, instead of doing the right thing, check the daily polling first.  If FDR had governed this way we would never have survived the Great Depression…”

I absolutely couldn’t agree more with what he’s saying.  It’s something I firmly believe is missing in our leaders today.

Without naming names, I could live with the decisions made by our leaders if they would truly stick to what they believe is right, even if I don’t necessarily agree with it.

I wonder if we’ll ever hear a politician, CEO, or any leader say some version of the following: “I firmly believe ABC is the right course of action.  This is why I believe it.  I will take steps XYZ to reach this goal.  And, I am prepared to fight to make sure it gets done, even it costs me my career, because I believe it is for the greater good.”

I realize things are usually never this black and white, but to truly lead, beliefs have to be firm, decions need to be made, and you need to be willing to “die” for what you believe is the truth.

I guess the simplest way to put it is; we voted you as our leader, now lead us.

PS.  When I replied to my uncles email, and said “You’re absolutely right.”  His response was; “Mark that on your calendar!!!”
