Politics As Usual

This is what drives me nuts about our political landscape as it stand today in our country.  It’s a two party system which, today (for the most part), means that one party has to disagree with the other one.  No matter what stance, or opinion was actually stated.  Rarely, if ever, do you see politicians support other politicians from the other party.  Even if it seems that their policies are aligned.

The most recent example of this would be John McCain’s response to President Obama’s exit strategy from Afghanistan.  From what I understood about the President’s plan, over the next year the United States will send in 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, and with conditions permitting, our withdrawal will begin 18 months later.  This seems like a plan Republicans would agree with.

Well, not completely of course.  McCain supported the Presidents plan but had this to say about the withdrawal date.

“Success is what dictates dates for withdrawal and if we don’t have that success and we only set an arbitrary date, it emboldens our enemies and disspirits our friends.”

I’m not a political expert by any means.  To date, I’ve only been a casual follower at best.  However, McCain, that’s not what he said!  To me, conditions permitting means that once we’ve reached our goals and had “success” in the area, we’ll begin the withdrawal of our troops over an 18 month period.  I don’t see an arbitrary date anywhere in there.

Maybe someone else can enlighten me.  How do Republicans suggest we withdrawal our troops?  Do they believe that one day Afghanistan will turn into green pastures of Democracy and we’ll just sneak our troops out over night, completely surprising our friends AND enemies?
